[Important] Tutorial and Files for Froyo for Motorola Backflip are up
In this post I will share a tutorial to update Motorola Backflip from 1.5 to 2.1 Eclair with JIT, Multitouch support and Ext4 file system support. The stock US Motorola Backflip Eclair doesn’t have Multitouch and this tutorial will give you that also! Motorola says that its best for Non-US Motorola Backflip to remain at Cupcake (Android 1.5). Really?

Here is how all the Motorola Backflip (MB300) owners can bring there out-dated firmwares to eclair for the time being. [HINT : Froyo] Requirements:

  1. Download the recovery j_r0dd-mb300-v1.8, unzip and copy to your phone’s SD card.
  2. Download the ROM signed-j_r0dd.preclair.v1.6.zip, and copy to your phone’s SD card.
  3. Download Motorola Backflip USB drivers for 32bit/x86 or 64bit/x64 and install.
  4. Download the android sdk and extract it in your c drive.
  5. Backup all your data(songs, images, videos, contacts, etc.) on phone and sd card. I may not be held responsible later.

[Update] If you are a VIVO, Oi, TIM, Personal Móvil Argentina, Optus & Telcel user then download signed-IT_radio.zip and copy to sd card, and flash this before step 11 and reboot, then continue from step 11. It will update your outdated radio version, which is needed for this ROM.

Procedure to get Eclair Up and Running:

  1. First of all you should root your Motorola Backflip, if not already have.
  2. Open command prompt, by typing “cmd” in run.
  3. Open c drive and navigate to android-sdk_r07-windows\android-sdk-windows\tools.
  4. Drag n drop the adb.exe file in command prompt and in the same line type “start-server”, and hit enter. The ADB server will start. Now plug in your phone make sure its in USB Debugging mode.

    image

  5. Drag n drop adb.exe again in command prompt and type “shell” and hit enter.
  6. type “su” enter and approve the request on phone if prompted, then type
    flash_image recovery /sdcard/j_r0dd-mb300-v1.8.img
  7. Now you have custom recovery on your phone. #Milestone – 1
  8. Reboot phone in recovery mode – power off phone –> press and hold camera button –> switch on phone while keeping camera button pressed.Phone will enter fast boot, immediately press volume down key(though will say up pressed) and wait until recovery loads.
  9. If you want your applications to be installed on sd card instead of phone memory then you will have to format your sd card at this point. See step 9-1 else goto step 10.
    1. Select “Partition SD” from the sub-menu. Use all the default values and just proceed through the process. Now that all data on your sd card is gone, copy the ROM file again to your card.
    2. Press the camera button to navigate back to the main menu. Navigate to “USB-MS toggle” and select it(press power button)(this mounts your phone as a drive on your PC, just like “USB Drive” mode). Now copy the Rom again to the sd card.
    3. After the file is copied, unplug the USB cable and tap the power button on your phone (this ends the USB-MS session).
  10. On your recovery menu goto Wipe and select “Wipe all” this will delete all data off your phone. rec2
  11. Press camera button to go back to main recovery menu and select “Flash zip from SD”. You’ll see the text “SDCARD: signed-j_r0dd.preclair.v”. Press the power key. ROM will begin flashing 🙂 rec3
  12. After completion, select “Reboot system now”. It may take upto 10-15 minutes to boot for the first time.

Hi Keshav,
I’ve tried rageagainstthecage before and it hasn’t worked for me. Neat job putting all the commands in a batch file though. I’ve been trying to figure out what I did wrong and the only thing I can think of is that perhaps I need to download all the Android SDKs (I only downloaded the ones for 1.5 and 2.1). Will try again once I have all the missing API files. Thank you so much for putting up this tutorial. Its really been a great help. BTW have you also upgraded your Backflip to 2.1? Is there any loss of functionality or any other glitches after upgrading? Is MotoNav still working after the upgrade?

@Kishan: After installing the Google APIs you can also try the SuperOneClickRoot method from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682.

Regards,

Vijay

Hi Vijay,
you dont need to download all the SDKs, just the one I have linked to, its more than enough. Make sure you extract the sdk in your C drive cause the commands I have put in the batch file are corresponding to that. secondly you should have USB debugging enabled while the phone is plugged in
Motonav works fine after eclair. I have the new apk of Motonav too(got it from MOTO) will post it.

Hi Dhiraj,
This tutorial works for all the backflips. I have an Indian backflip and runs great. Chances to brick your moto are next to none as it doesnt have radio in it.
Even if somehow you brick it, you can restore it via rsdlite.. do write if need help at any point. cheers 🙂

Dhiraj,
make sure you have extracted the sdk to c drive and after extracting it to C drive your path looks like this “c:\android-sdk_r07-windows\android-sdk-windows\tools”
and the other archive sits like this “c:\Moto_MSM_Root\1.5\” ..
connect the phone -> turn off usb drive(set it in pc charging mode) -> thirdly enable USB Debugging by going to [Settings->Applications->Development->Check USB Debugging]
Now double click the batch file.

Hi,
I’m still experiencing problems rooting my backflip. I start the batch file and reach the point where I have to key in commands at the $ cursor with no problem. However, when I open the emulator on my phone and type ./ rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin after changing directory to data/local/tmp, I get the message “permission denied”. Help!

Regards,
Vijay

Reply

16 Keshav Gupta December 13, 2010 at 6:04 pm

Vijay, that error is showing up because you havent set the permissions for the bin file
after executing the batch file on your pc ,on the $ prompt you have to execute the 4th step ie
cd /data/local/tmp
chmod 0755 rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
chmod 0755 install-root.sh

then on terminal emulator on your phone execute those commands.

Hi Keshav,
First of all id like to thank you for patiently guiding all us noobies through this process. Actually I had keyed in those commands from step 4 at the $ prompt on my pc. Then I goto the emulator on my pc and key in the commands given in step 5 but keep getting permission denied. Should I leave the adb command prompt on my pc open when I key in commands on the emulator on my phone? I’m using Connectbot as the emulator on my phone. Should I use some other software? Once again thanks a ton.

32 Keshav Gupta December 15, 2010 at 9:17 pm

Dear Krishan,
Three things can be the cause of this:
1. You haven’t extracted the files at the right location.. please check the tutorial for same
2. You don’t have your phone connected in USB Debugging mode.. check the tutorial for same
3. You don’t have drivers installed.. please install them again

Download Motorola Backflip USB drivers for 32bit/x86 or 64bit/x64 and install.
Download the android sdk and extract it in your c drive and check if adb.exe is present in “c:\android-sdk_r07-windows\android-sdk-windows\tools”
Download the rageagainstthecage file and unzip and extract to c drive and make sure two files and two folders are present in “c:\Moto_MSM_Root”
Download this backflip-1.5.bat batch file and save it on your desktop or other place you like.

If the above all are OK then I will try to resolve your problem personally..catch me on techgeekguy.com[at]gmail.com

Jorge its absolutely safe to upgrade.. because this doesn’t change your radio. If your backflip is working right now with your current carrier, it will remain working after the upgrade too!

Hi,

I’m in a bit of a jam. I’ve reached step 9-2. But now my computer is refusing to copy the ROM to my phone’s SD-card. It detects it when I toggle on the USB-MS mode, but it just refuses to copy. I’ve even tried copying directly to my SD card by putting it in a SD card adaptor and inserting it directly in my comp, but I’m still facing the same problem. Help.

HI Keshave,

Ok so I popped my SD card into the phone again and saw that the Signed-jr0dd-preclair file is till there…. so I skipped 9-2 and carried on with the other steps. However, after doing the WIPE ALL, when I try to flash the ROM from the SD card, I get the following:
Install from sdcard…..
Finding update package…
Opening update package….
E:Can’t open /sdcard/signed-j_r0dd.preclair.v1.2.1.zip (bad)
Installation aborted.
It looks like I’m really screwed. Help.

49 Keshav Gupta December 19, 2010 at 4:51 pm

Vijay, you should format your sd card…
-> go to partition sd and then select partition sd -> press power to confirm->select default values
after partition mount the phone in usb toggle mode and copy that zip file again.
then flash zip from sd
It will go fine
and checkout the overclock post for the backflip, notice the speed difference afterwards.

Hi Keshav,

Thanks. Did that. This time when I flash the ROM it all goes ok until the verification. Then it gives the following:
Verifying update package…..
E: Corrupt file:system/app/ADW.Launcher.apk
E:Verification failed
Installation aborted.

I think maybe i’ll have to re-download the preclair zip. However, I’ve got restricted access to the internet right now. Is there anyway I can get my phone working at this point without redownloading the preclair?

Vijay.

Krishan,
1. press home or menu button in that mode..It resets some sort of deadlock and it will boot fine.

2. Else you can do one thing flash the ClockworkMod Recovery, Go to Market, search for RomManager, download it, then it will ask if you have backflip etc questions just give the appropriate answers. And it will flash the ClockworkMod Recovery.
reboot your phone in recovery by cam button method and then flash the 84mb zip file already in your sd card.

Carlos,
update hasn’t been flashed correctly, either your zip file is corrupted or your sd card. Copy the 84mb zip again to your sd card and then flash it from recovery.

Hi keshav. After successful upgrade i just Want to clear few doubts.
1. Does this ROM is having 3G supp0rt because. Network select option is not active to select 2G or 3G but its set to automatic
2. Is there any risk to use multi touch?
3 i m having class 2 sandisk 8 GB SD card so is. It ok to use apps 2 sd?

Reply

101 Keshav Gupta December 27, 2010 at 4:01 pm

Sunny,
1. ROM supports 3G.
2. There is No risk in using multitouch because the touchscreen driver is already supported multitouch only thing was that kernel was not reading it. Now that kernel which is in this ROM can read two separate X,Y co-ordinates. It doesn’t pose any sort of danger.
3. Regardless the class 2 card is little slow, app2sd will work great. You will be impacted in situations like where you have to watch or record a 720p/1080p video to your card.

Is anybody else having the trouble to be unable to choose the disconnection of the 3G network? (trying to save on my data plan)
If so, how have you managed?
I installed the 3G WatchDog but the option isn’t active there either.
Any advice?

Dear Keshav Gupta,

I fulfilled all the requirements to update out dated firmware from my backflip(mb300) from AT&t. Then i rooted my backflip as per your procedure. I passed all with a littel diffiulty because i am not a computer professional. Milestone #1 was achieved and i was so exited. Then i rebooted my backflip on recovery mode. All the steps from 9 to 11 were passed successfully. After completing all the steps i rebooted my backflip but my phone is not working now. It started turning on and off again and again. I tried all the steps as per your instruction but my phone is not restarting. Can you help me in this regard? I told you that i am an accountant by profession and a lay man in computers. Hi Keshav,
I am in the US and have official 2.1 update on my backflip, Z4root, and Titanium Backup Pro. I used Sideloader Wonder Machine to load z4root after it was taken off of market. It works great! I have frozen all At&t garbage, including market updater. Can I load the Overclocker without the custom Eclair 2.1? If not, do you know of an overclocker that will work on my BF as it is? I tried Overclock Widget and it doesn’t change the clock speed at all. Thanks for helping all of us Moto BF Noobs!
Sincerely,

its possible to keep your official 2.1 ROM but you will have to get the custom recovery on your phone. Follow this tutorial upto step 7.
then flash this zip file using the overclocking tutorial .

Currently no browser (stock, opera, firefox, skyfire, dolphin) support NTLM.
So your proxy script won’t work. Maybe Google will add this feature in Honeycomb, or expect a browser to add that soon.

My functional frozen apps list, so far. I now have a faster phone that works how I want it to work. Everything with ‘blur’ in it is frozen.

adservice
at&t maps
at&t navigator
at&t radio
at&t wifi hotspots
blur.res.2.1-update1
Happenings2.1-update1
IM 02.00
IM offline service 2.1-update1
Market Updater 1.0
mobile banking
mobile video
mobiTV
motoblur calendar service 2.1-update1
motoblur megamaid 2.1-update1
motoblur services 2.1-update1
motoblur social sharing 2.1-update1
motoblur storage monitor 2.1-update1
musicID
quick contact 2.1-update1
social messaging 2.1-update1
social messaging service 2.1-update1
social status 2.1-update1
universal inbox 2.1-update1
where 1.9.6

I use ES Task Manager to kill all apps, then launch what I use, to see what runs it.
I also use Cache Cleaner. If an app is slow to load, stop it and clean the cache, then it loads quickly.
I did have a weird issue at first. The phone would only ring audibly if I set it to Ring Only w no CID. After a reboot, it is working normal.
Also, a great shortcut to create (IMO) is Facebook Phonebook. It is in the Folders section.

Hi, I’m using an Australian Optus Backflip. I followed the process to the letter, and my phone is essentially bricked. I’ve tried reflashing with preclair many times with no success. I’ve also tried to flash using RSD lite with the Optus firmware, and had no success with that either. The .sbf file wouldn’t initialise. I’m pretty much at the end of my rope here, and was wondering if there was any advice you could give me on unbricking it.

Thanks.

136 Keshav Gupta December 31, 2010 at 1:45 pm

Michael,
did you flash the radio image? I have already mentioned that to do so. It is required to update your radio before flashing this ROM
You can flash using RSD lite in USB init mode. To go into USB init :
power off -> keep d+j pressed -> power on leave d+j when you see blue screen
now flash with RSD lite and make sure you have the moto usb drivers installed prior to that.

Thanks a lot Keshav, did every step as you posted, and worked correctly.

Just a little tip (may be): you mention when to plugin the phone (with charge only) but i didnt know when to unplug it (after doing the recovery thing and restart the phone, if you have the phone plugged to the usb still, ir will power on again byself) so probably after doing the recovery thing add a “unplug the phone from the usb now. 🙂

Amazing tuto and thanks again happy with my 2.1 now 🙂

Thank you again for your help upgrading to 2.1 on gtalk the other day. I have found another not so small issue which MAY or MAY NOT be related to the upgrade.

My hardware keyboard, camera and volume buttons no longer work once Android 2.1 is fully loaded. Multiple reboots and searching the phone settings for clues has yeilded nothing.

I am able to get into the recovery mode etc but once android is loaded I loose the use of the buttons again.

Any ideas/help on this annoying would be much appreciated.

Thanks

The drivers didn’t load correctly. You should re flash the phone. No need to wipe anything.
After flashing you will have to flash overclock again.
For restart issue reduce the overclock speed to 650MHz

I was having the problem with phone stuck on the white screen after step 12, so I tried wiping and re-flashing as you suggest in the comments with no success, but the following worked for me:
– Wipe all.
– Flash again.
– Wipe all again.
All the above in the same recovery mode session.
I’m in Mexico with Telcel, so I applied the radio update and all it’s working fine so far. A lot of fun is waiting for me with my new phone. 🙂

Thanks for your answer, Keshav;
that’s just what i did:
i flashed the radio rom (the file named “signed-IT_radio.zip”) and then flashed the file “signed-j_r0dd.preclair.v1.2.1.zip”. both files were previously in the sd card of course and as it did not work i have wiped all and re flashed several times, making slight variations.
the most i have let the phone reboot is about 40 minutes, and still it’s in the white page with the M logo.
would appreciate some advice, i use this phone a lot.

Hey all, it’s done!
This is what i did differently, so one or two may use it:
the radio file was flashed on its own, no other file was in the sd card; then re boot; then usb drive mode again and copy the rom file and delete the radio file from the sd card; then flash rom file; reboot; done!
Thank you very much for your help, Keshav, and for your spanish effort.

the reason i asked for the stock ROM was that i hav bought the phone just a month ago so it is under warranty … if these seems to be any problem i can load the stock ROM nd then try if the problem is solved .. if not then i can appply for warranty 😀

Thank you for your time…Do reply back

Vaibhav,
Its all about personal opinions. Btw I have overclocked my backflip and deblurred my ROM using Titanium Backup. So I find it many times faster but it’s your call to update.
I haven’t seen any Backflip rendered useless here.. I was able to recover everyone’s backflip which went down, so I would say it’s pretty safe. But ya risk is there!

Keshav,
So buddy…its obvious that we would void the warranty of backflip..by upgrading it.I have a warranty for 3 yrs and only couple of months have passed with my new MB300.
If in any case I dont wanna use 2.1 further….or if I have to make use of my warranty from company…then are there any methods of degrading back to 1.5…??….If so…then would there be any exceptions under which I wont be able to do degrade.
Thank you

175 Vaibhav Garg January 8, 2011 at 3:25 am

Dhiraj,
1.3.1 doesn’t have froyo market, multitouch. Thats why I recommend 1.2.1
Moreover the only difference left is of kernel, which you can update from flashing the overclocked kernel I have provided http://www.techgeekguy.com/2010/12/overclock-your-motorola-backflip-2-1-eclair-and-increase-its-performance.html

Dhiraj, these ROMs are just different flavors of the same thing.
You can try any of them which pleases you. Deblurred ROM means with no moto apps.. So if you dont want them you can get rid of them with TitaniumBackup also.
Or else use a ROM with these apps not in it like the ones you have mentioned. Try the ROM with test radio. And let us know the results 🙂

Sad pointless if i cant get all my contacts back

so ill just try extract the gmaps 5.0 apk from titanium backup and move to my previous rom..

Hi!

1st of all very nice series of tutorials indeed. I was facing some issues while updating to 2.1 but after reading all the comments and replies I reset my phone and then started the upgrade process from step one and eventually succeeded without any issues. If you face any issues reset the phone but, make sure u have taken a complete backup of it.

Secndly I wanted to ask Keshav is that will it now be possible to upgrade to a much more recent android version such as 2.2 or maybe 2.3.

– boot into recovery mode to flash again by pressing power + camera button
– use rsd lite by pressing J+D with power
it seems that nothing is working right now but the keys (vibration)
is there any thing I can do to fix this ?

Hi Keshav
I got the phone working on Eclair. All thanks to you! I had more or less given up on it (phone kept hanging) but this upgrade seems to have solved those problems. The phone is lovely, by the way, nice and responsive. The keyboard is quite handy for people who are clumsy with the touchscreen (such as I) but I’ve been using the touch screen for a couple of days now and it’s not that bad.

Anyway, thanks again and may your tribe increase

After that I wipe all again and installed just the “SDCARD: signed-j_r0dd.preclair.v” without the signed-IT_radio.zip then works perfectly.
Now I am worry if it will works with VIVO, Oi, TIM because I am going back to Brazil soon. What do you think I need to do?

Hi Jerome,
you should get the android 2.2 for backflip here! It has multitouch and is way faster than eclair

Hi prashant wait for sometime after upgrade and then you will be able to register to moto blur or you can restart and check again because it happens with me also and after one day I am able to register.

then dont drag and drop just type “cd android-sdk_r07-windows” and hit enter key then you will get “C://android-sdk_r07-windows/” then type
“cd android-sdk-windows” and hit enter key then you will get “C://android-sdk_r07-windows/android-sdk-windows” then type ” cd tools” and hit enter key then you will get “C://android-sdk_r07-windows/android-sdk-windows/ tools” then write “adb” and press enter then you will get all the data there and then write “adb shell” also check in C drive that folder should be as it is i.e in C drive there should be “android-sdk_r07-windows” and inside it there sholud be ” android-sdk-windows” and inside that ” tools ” and inside it “adb.exe”

1. install the patch provided for multitouch to work. Look for the post on overclocking kernel.
2. use the capacitive menu button on apn settings screen to add and delete apn settings.
3. i hope your power button isn’t damaged. screen lock works fine.

thanks Keshav,
that was great.

but for some who prefer performance over functionality.. i think 1.5 would be good.

like slow zoomin and zoomout in gallery(2.1), etc…
or is this just the case with me..

please enlighten me..

thanks anyways.. hats off to you..

if you want to stay with eclair for some particular reason go for 1 & 3 else jump to froyo and go for 2 & 3
1. overclock eclair kernel
2. froyo for backflip
3. optimize performance of your android phone

Please read the tutorial carefully. ROOT your Backflip first as explained there then flash the recovery.

Thanks

2.2 is the plain Google version with no Motorola apps. But you can use this 2.1 Eclair on your Backflip for getting Blur!

I upgraded from cupcake to this version of eclair and had it for like a week, it’s a good upgrade but its painfully slow.. i couldnt stand it!! .. so i upgraded to froyo even though the actual rom version messes up the camera.. but its a loooooot faster and better overall… dont get this.. get froyo instead. 🙂

You are a bloody legend. My phone is now an updated Australian MB300 backflip! 🙂 I was using it on wi-fi fine, but to get my 3g happening I had to go into “Network Settings” -> “Access point names” and then select “Optus Internet”

Thank you all so much, Motorola Australia should employ you, considering their service and lack of updates down under is so shit!

Hi Keshav
I followed your instructions on my Backflip with a retail ROM from DE/CH. After installing the recovery ROM and a new OS, I am getting a loop with the M sign followed by a blank screen upon reboot. I tried various ROMs and I flashed the v2 recovery ROM (j_r0dd-mb300-v2.0), but still the same results. The latest attempt was with signed-j_r0dd.preclair.v1.6.zip (again) and a different 2GB SD card. (I suspected it might be a SD card problem, this one has not been repartitioned.) The recovery ROM reported in all cases that the installed upgrades were successful. At the moment the phone is bricked. What can I do to get it back? Thanks, L

i suspect you have an incompatible radio version. Flash the IT-Radio given in the tutorial.

Yeah! Success!
I repeated the step where you had to do “Flash zip from SD” less or more 36354634634 times… Until I realized I made a stupid error:
The Preclair NOT be zipped!
Thanks 🙂
