Updated From 2.1 to 2.2..
works smoother than eclair..
update file also smaller than eclair..
this is anyway a good guide..

8 Kumaran February 25, 2011 at 2:37 pm

this version should support app2sd na? is there any other feature available than eclair?

Reply

9 Keshav Gupta February 25, 2011 at 2:43 pm

Froyo has inbuilt a2sd. No need to partition your sd card or any complicated thing.
Froyo is fast and I mean it.. I am getting quadrant scores (without overclocking) :- 370-380
Feature wise now you can install many more applications which were not available for eclair. My favorite is chrome 2 phone. And now all the google apps(gmail, youtube etc.) are updateable

Way to go Keshav… you’ve done it again. You are truly a godsend for all of us who were stupid enough to buy a Motorola Backflip: a flippin brilliant phone that was unfourtunately crippled by Motorola’s flippin stupidity. BTW, other than the camera crashing are there any other issues with this ROM? Does the trackpad still work?

Reply

13 Keshav Gupta February 25, 2011 at 5:57 pm

yes the trackpad works! and the camera drivers are good too just the default camera app included is buggy..
I am using FxCamera from market and it works like a charm!

That recovery file name in the zip pack is “j_r0dd-mb300-v1.8.img” not “recovery.img” thats why u getting no such file or directory error

Seriously wanted Camera & Video to work.

Pros
Smoother and faster than Eclair.
Quickly response.

Cons
Camera & Video shows a scratch thing.
Camera & Video force closes every time.

Do you make the change temporary, just while you’re playing, or have it done permanently?

Sorry that the message got merged. It was actually not for Angry birds what I said. I do not overclock my system as it gets heated up very easily. I am still on 528mhz and its fine. Am not sure about playing angry birds on BF like it runs on a 1ghz processor.

Hi Keshav….
Thanks a lot for the upgrade…
I was ablt to find a software on the market for the Camera problem…
Its called Camera 360 Ultimate and it is a paid application…. The camera clarity is great and doesnt crash that often.
Also, can you tell me how to flash a Clockworkmod recovery 3… im not able to find the image file anywhere… I have Motorola Backflip MB300

Reply

56 Keshav Gupta March 1, 2011 at 4:18 pm

to flash clockworkmod recovery, install “Rom manager” from market. From rom manager you can install the recovery.
Btw there are no roms on rom manager for backflip.. this is the only Froyo Rom.
And flashing clockworkmod will overwrite the previous recovery

Reply

57 Backflip Lover March 2, 2011 at 11:59 pm

Is it ‘Camera 360 Ultimate’? I couldn’t find that app on market thru my phone. Instead I downloaded ‘Camera Advance’ by ‘mnApps’. But unfortunately it works only on 2.0 mp setting. On 5.0 mp, it hangs. My purchase was a waste anyways.

Keshav – We are still waiting for a solution

If I update my Backflip to your Froyo rom, if I decide later I want to use eclair can I just load the rom for eclair, or once I go from eclair to froyo do I have to stay with froyo. The reason for asking is if you upgrade from cupcake to eclair you can never go back to cupcake.

If I upgrade from 2.1, will I finally be able to install and run Flash 10.1? I tried the Flash 10.1 hack for 2.1 with no success. When I bought my Backflip, AT&T lied and said it was Flash capable and wouldn’t take it back except for exchange for another Backflip so I’m stuck for another 1 1/2 years with this boat anchor. I will admit that the thing runs alot smoother since the upgrade from 1.5.

DJ, sorry but right now you cant install adobe flash on backflip 2.2 . As the processor in Motorola Backflip is a ARMv6 and flash is compiled by Adobe for ARMv7 and later. May be in future if Adobe compiles it for ARMv6 you can install Flash / or If I find a way to install Flash on ARMv6 will share with you all

69 DJ Redwing March 4, 2011 at 3:13 pm

I read somewhere that there are a couple other Android phones with the ARMv6 that run Flash Light. Do you know if it can be pulled from one of those phones and used on Backflip?

If you get “unknown error 18” then install your app first in internal memory and then move it to sd card.
1. To install in internal memory go to Settings->cyanogenmod settings->Application settings->Install location->internal
2. Install the app
3. Move to external memory afterwards (to save space)

Dear Keshav,
Never knew such brainy people lived in India, who are popular in their own era.

Thanks for the the update I upgraded to 2.1 and now planning for 2.2.

I have a few questions if you may find time to answer.
1. Does putting custom ROMs voids the warrenty?
2. I don’t know why I have small fear in upgrading to 2.2 because upgrading it to 2.1 made the backflip a bit slower with low remaining memory always.
3. Should I upgrade? (Oh please tell Yes!)

Thanks for such great tutorials!!
Cheers!
Kumar Ravi

88 Keshav Gupta March 6, 2011 at 10:56 pm

1. It does inhibits warranty! but you can easily switch back to your old firmware.
2. Android 2.2 is faster, much much faster.
3. Its a personal choice, if you want motoblur or not etc. If you are happy with eclair than enjoy it, if you want a true google experience then get this ROM.

89 Amritpal Singh March 13, 2011 at 12:28 am

totally rite .its fast.. much faster but camera crashes 🙁

i added the 2.1 framework camera app but its also crashing in same way

The problem is that the camera drivers support the least resolution 0f 420 * 340 or something. While taking pics in this least resolution. the camera doesn’t crash even while taking multiple pics.

91 Wolfman March 7, 2011 at 2:59 am

I have Eclair set up with my applications and settings. Can I delete some of the apps that are built into this rom, or should I leave ’em alone? Second, before I Install the Froyo how do I create a recovery file from the current image with my applications installed and some of yours removed, is that the same as backup in the mb300 android recovery app. Last, pertaining to Froyo how far have you gotten with your camera issue? I use my camera often and like the 5.0 resolution plus the flash. Is this camera thing going to be permanent or do you think you will find a solution?

Reply

92 Keshav Gupta March 7, 2011 at 12:12 pm

Hi wolfman,
1. you can take the backup of your old rom in the recovery menu. There you will find an option to backup. It will make an image of your current ROM with settings and applications installed on your phone memory.
2. You can remove add whatever apps you want with the free app “Titanium Backup
3. Camera works but crashes after one pic(needs reopening the app), camera issue will be solved in the near future. I cant give an ETA at this point

Thanks

by blur i mean MotoBlur, the Motorola’s applications which are built into their 2.1 ROM. This Froyo ROM is pure Google – no crap in it from AT&T or Moto

Thanks mate for wonderful froyo f/w. , I’ve been using Preclair 2.1 update 1 on my BF….its works fine except lagging….Motoblur is perfect for FB,Twitter

I’ve some questions to ask, pls. guide me.
(1) Does MOTOBLUR patch or fix is available for this new Froyo? because i love to see ‘happenings’ & ‘status notifications’ on my home screen.
(2) is ther any other soft which can make status update in FB,twitter or any social network site with brand name ‘ Motolur shows motorola icon in FB.

pls. reply …

1. There is no MotoBlur patch for Froyo.
2. You can get Facebook, Twitter updates with the native apps from Android market

Is there an estimated time when the next update for froyo 2.2.1 for the Backflip will be ready? The reason I ask is because I live in a region where hands free is required when using your phone in a vehicle (where I spend a lot of time) and to be able to use voice over bluetooth is essential to me.

With this rom many of my apps that did not force close before, now do quite often. Also the I love having and using the 5mp camera on my phone. I’ve tried multiple camera apps and none of them work. It force closes as it takes the picture so I can’t even take one and reopen to take another. Please fix these bugs very soon!

EX of the force close apps – words with friends, nesoid, youtube, actionsnap, camera fun free, lightning bug, and a few more.

Puppet, youtube and all are working fine. Did you wipe all from recovery before flashing the ROM.
For Camera issue you can use silent camera, it wont force close. I will update the post and will email everyone on the notifications list once its ready!

Yes, I wiped it completely and followed your instructions completely. The silent cam does work nicely for taking pictures but does not load them to the gallery, which is kind of annoying. I will take it as a temporary fix. Thanks 🙂

I don’t use these apps all the time so I don’t want them always running in the background. How do I stop them from opening all the time?

You can use “Titanium Backup” from Android Market to remove all those unwanted apps! And you can turn off the background syncing option so that those apps dont keep reopening.
Use the power control widget for that.

I seemed to get everything working, following your directions I’d say about 95% as directed. One flaw was that, after wiping and everything else as directed (almost), I had to flash the Gapps first, reboot normally, then go back and flash the mod. Why? Because i accidentally copied the locked .zip of the mod in the beginning, and didn’t have enough room later in recovery menu or a way to delete anything to make room (so I thought)

So…..
At this point, I am watching the cyanogenmod logo on first bootup for OVER 40 minutes and I am afraid to do anything. Hopefully, i will have used my *new* phone successfully by the time you reach this.

Help!

142 Keshav Gupta March 19, 2011 at 3:31 am

Justin, try removing the sd card and reboot. If your phone still doesn’t take off just do a wipe all in recovery!
And to use your phone as a memory stick in recovery mode – enable ms toggle option in recovery menu

My backflip upon booting in recovery mode gives 3 options (a) reboot (b) sdcard: update.zip (c) wipe data/factory rest.

I have wiped the data and unzipped the update-backflip-froyo.zip to extract signed zip. Now, I have tried two options (1) Renaming update-backflip-froyo.zip as update.zip, (2) Creating a new update.zip with update-backflip-froyo.zip. Both of these methods give a “No Signature” error

delete all other zip files you copied to your sdcard, except the signed zip file which you must have extracted from the protected zip.

bash: ./adb: No such file or directory
I’m looking right at the file, it’s there! I checked it’s permissions and it’s readable/writable and executable. But the cli is showing no such file is there.

I did “chmod +x adb” first. That worked. I feel like a dumb-ass right now.. What am I doing wrong?

you should try hitting tab key in terminal after getting into that folder to see what files are available.
else may be a computer restart may solve it, or copy over the files again. I just can’t imagine what could cause that

I looked, it shows it as a file in both nautilus and terminal. ./a(tab-autocomplete) gives ./adb. I rebooted, still same issue. Perhaps I should report this as a bug for my distribution (Linux Mint). Never had problems with Ubuntu or any other distro’s I’ve used or tested. Seems odd to me.

got 2.2 up! its so cool. only flaw that im really worrying about is that there is no “off” for screen timeout. i have a quick question tho. the market app u gave us is an older version and there is a new market update version. any chance you know how to get the new one?

Thanks Keshav, this is great rom for MB300. But I have a complicated thing when use GPS and map, I turned on wifi and GPS but it couldn’t find my position after i updated to 2.2 Froyo. I used GPS and wifi to search my position on map with Eclair 2.1 and it worked well. Do you have any suggestion for this problem. Thanks

You have to use your phone in an open area for the GPS to work!
Download GPS Status from market, which helps in getting a fix earlier as it downloads updated A-GPS data from servers.

What is the weather program you are using on your screenshoot ? And also the digital clock program ? Can’t seem to find them in the ROM. A downloaded program ? Thanks!

First I would like to thank you for informtion given by email about Motorola Backflip Froyo Camera Fixed + Overclock added..
i’ll do all update and follow all procedure without any problem cause your instruction are easy to understand, and now with new rom my camera works good and i can overclock my phone using set cpu 😀 but wait, i still have a problem with my phone..
1. When i turn it on my phone start up/booting take so long, it’s take about 5 minute to start 🙁 with previous rom my phone can start/boot just less than 1 minute.
2. Bar code scanner it’s not working.. i see just black screen with red line blinking..
3. When i’m playing some game, my phone keep restarting..
I’ve even tried reflashing the rom again, and still the same problem..
Mr Keshav Gupta or anyone can help me please..??

Hi Romel,
1. It is because of the caches being initialized and loading that turn on takes longer.
2. Try updating the application, if it doesn’t help. You can use Google Googles from market it serves the same(better+more) functionality.
3. Set the max speed of CPU to 691Mhz it’s much more stable. 768Mhz makes the phone unstable!

also, whenever i try to mute a call, it just does NOT mute. the little “muted” icon appears at the top of the screen, but the person on the other line can hear everything perfectly and the little green light on the mute button doesn’t turn on. new features are great, but it doesn’t mean anything if the phone isn’t a good phone…

I updated to froyo 2 months ago, do I have to install all over again to fix the camera issue???

219 Keshav Gupta May 17, 2011 at 1:58 am

No, You do not need to root again or flash recovery again!
just copy the two zip files – the updated Gapps and Froyo rom and you can resume from step 10 🙂

Hello, I updated again and the camera is working perfectly. But now the music crashes and can’t hear my music. Is this normal? What app you recommend for the music?

221 Keshav Gupta May 17, 2011 at 3:08 pm

Music app is working perfectly. You should try wiping dalvik and cache in the recovery mode.
Otherwise you can use winamp from android market(free)

will i lose anything when i do the camera update? apps, pics, vids, backgrounds, etc.

223 Keshav Gupta May 17, 2011 at 11:50 am

No, you wont loose any data unless you do a wipe all or wipe data in recovery.
Although you can wipe dalvik-vm cache and cache in the recovery menu without any worries.

oh you replied quickly haha. i was gonna edit my message but ill just ask it right now. when adding the gapps and the rom back on to my SD card, should i delete the gapps and rom i first put on my SD card or should i just leave them there and add the new ones too?

225 Keshav Gupta May 17, 2011 at 3:05 pm

you can delete the previous zip files as they are not required anymore.

Hello Keshav appreciate all of the work you do. My backflip has been running flawlessly. Two minor things though: First my recorder does not work and the recorded videos do not play sound. Is this a known issue? Secondly, I have downloaded the two new files and put them onto my phones sd card. I get to recovery mode but, whenever I try to open that zip from the sd card the screen just goes black.. Any suggestions?? Thank you for your time- Oscar

I have tried this and all I get after flashing is my phone continually cycling through the boot screen. I just get the white motorola screen and then it goes blank and then the white screen again and then it reboots again. Any help? this is the second handset I have tried and both are stuck in a reboot cycle.
